America’s Favorite Sports Car, The Chevrolet Corvette
Born in 1953, the Chevrolet Corvette was changed from a pleasant little roadster to a V-8 beast by Zora Arkus-Duntov. He was instrumental in giving the Corvette its classic lines and all American style and power that are still visible in Corvettes in Olympia Fields today. Zora, however, was not an American. He was actually born to Russian parents in Belgium in 1909. He spent many of his formative years in Leningrad in the Soviet Union. Chevrolet did not publicize this during the Cold War years of the 1950’s for the bad press and image it might give to the Corvette. Even though Zora is not a native born American, his is ashes are interred at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY.
Another interesting fact is that the original Corvette did not come with a V-8 engine. This almost seems unthinkable today, but the ‘Vette originally came with a six-cylinder motor. Thankfully, this only last two years before the V-8 was introduced and made American history. The GM sports car legend might have been history itself in 1953. When GM began major production in 1954, there were more cars than there were buyers and GM considered killing off the Corvette. Ford, however, announced that it was going to introduce the Thunderbird and GM did not want to give Ford the satisfaction of monopolizing the sportscar market, so GM continued producing the Corvette.
