What is My Car Maintenance Schedule?

December 14th, 2018 by

Man changing oilWhen you purchase a new car around Chicago Heights, you’re bound to feel as though nothing can slow you down. However, if you want to get the best possible performance out of your vehicle for years to come, then you need to be ready to keep up with regular scheduled maintenance right away. This process doesn’t have to be stressful — in fact, we’ve made it as easy as possible by laying out the necessary steps according to the times at which they need to be performed. Follow these recommended maintenance intervals to get the most out of your new car, for regular commutes between Chicago and Frankfort as well as longer journeys.

Every Month

Some parts of your vehicle need consistent love and attention. We recommend that you perform these tasks at least once a month:

  • Inspect your check engine light
  • Wash your car and clean out the interior
  • Check your exterior and interior lights
  • Inspect your tires, checking pressure, treads, and wear and tear
  • Make sure windshield wiper fluid is filled

Every Three Months or 3,000 Miles

It’s a good idea to take these preventative maintenance steps once every three months or every 3,000 miles:

  • Check the fluid levels for your automatic transmission and power steering
  • Replace your engine oil and air filter
  • Check your belts, exhaust, and hoses
  • Check and, if necessary, replace your fuel filter

Every Six Months or 6,000 Miles

Every six months or every 6,000 miles, you should perform the following checks:

  • Inspect your car battery and cables
  • Ensure that your chassis is lubricated properly
  • Replace your windshield wipers
  • Give your vehicle a fresh coat of wax or polish

Every 12 Months or 12,000 Miles

Once a year, or once every 12,000 miles, you should have each of the following inspected:

  • Transmission fluid levels
  • Coolant levels
  • Steering and suspension systems
  • Brake system

Why Follow a Car Maintenance Schedule?

Vehicles are some of the most complex machines that we interact with on a daily basis, and when you’re moving at high speeds day in and day out, any number of things could go wrong. Regular maintenance can help to prevent dangerous breakdowns and expensive emergencies. You can avoid paying for expensive auto parts and repairs by staying on top of a regular maintenance schedule.

Of course, regular maintenance is beneficial even if you’re not at risk for a major breakdown. What’s more, by keeping your vehicle properly maintained, you’ll help to ensure that it retains more of its value over time. Often, vehicles must be serviced regularly in order to remain under warranty.
