Chevrolet Is Working on A Natural Gas Powered Impala
If you’re looking for a super efficient low emissions vehicle in the Chicago area, then you’ll have another option soon: Chevrolet is adding a new, natural gas powered Impala to the lineup for 2015. The Impala will be able to easily switch back and forth from natural gas to regular gasoline. We’re looking forward to adding this car to our Impala lineup here at Chevy of Homewood, so read on for more about the new natural gas powered Impala.
Compressed natural gas has been used to power vehicles for years, but consumer vehicles using the clean running fuel have been few and far between. Chevrolet has, in the past, offered a version of the Silverado with the bi-fuel technology, but those trucks are mostly sold for fleet use. Compressed natural gas is much cleaner burning than gasoline, but with less than a thousand filling stations in the country, most people aren’t willing to commit to a car that runs exclusively on the fuel.
That’s where the dual system comes in: the natural gas powered Impala will be able to switch from one fuel to the other at the push of a button. That will give the Impala the flexibility necessary for long range or short range driving. For local trips in the area of a compressed natural gas filling station, the vehicle can be powered exclusively by natural gas, but when roaming farther afield, it can switch over the regular gasoline.
Dan Akerson, GM CEO, said, “We know that U.S. energy security won’t come from a one-off moonshot. It will flow from our systematic investment in technology and innovation.”
