The 2014 Chevy Camaro Z/28 Burns Up the Track at Nurburgring
Chevrolet hasn’t really been a brand that feels the need to compete on the famous European proving ground in the past—Chevy has usually stuck with more tangible benchmarks like horsepower, 0 to 60 mph times, and top speeds. However, the new 2014 Chevy Camaro Z/28 is all about the track. While it has the biggest engine in the Camaro lineup, it doesn’t make the most horsepower. It’s all about handling, performance, and—you guessed it—lap times at the Nurburgring in Germany.
Chevy engineers took the track tuned Camaro to the German race track as part of a day of testing, where GM drivers put the Camaro Z/28 through its paces at a number of different race tracks. The kicker of this test was that they could only change brakes and tires between runs, and all of the runs took place in a 24 hour period. This test is obviously more about durability than top speeds. That’s probably why the Z/28 took its lap at the Nurburgring in the rain, instead of waiting for ideal conditions.
But you know what? The Camaro Z/28 still put up an incredible time of 7 minutes 37.47 seconds in the wet. You can bet that the Z/28 would do better by a few seconds if the track had been dry! Just how good is that time? Well it beats a Camaro ZL1 by four seconds. It also beats a stock Porsche 911, an Audi R8, and the Lamborghini Murcielago. Try cross shopping those European supercars against the Z/28 and you’ll see that you should probably just grab a half dozen Camaros instead!
While the Camaro Z/28 has the biggest engine in the Camaro lineup at 7.0L it produces a measly 500 hp, compared to the 556 hp in the supercharged 6.2L V8 under the hood of the ZL1. There’s something to be said for the predictable response of a naturally aspirated mill, especially in track driving. But the biggest change is in the suspension, which gets significantly stiffer springs. The Z/28 also loses about 300 pounds compared to other Camaro models.
